Sewer problem closes County Courthouse

Crews from the City of Kingwood’s water and sewer department had to close Court Street while working on a sewer line problem and replacement at the courthouse. The courthouse was closed all day on Thursday, Oct. 29, and Friday, Oct. 30, but is expected to re-open on Monday, Nov. 2.

KINGWOOD — A sewer line problem at the county courthouse on Main Street in Kingwood forced officials to close it down Thursday and today. According to Preston County Administrator Kathy Mace, the county is working with City of Kingwood to replace a near-hundred-year-old sewer line located on the courthouse grounds at Price Street.

“We’ve had problems with our sewer line before,” Mace explained. “It didn’t back up this time, but as a precautionary measure, we decided to go ahead and replace the old terracotta pipe.”

The courthouse is home to the county’s entire judicial system, which includes the circuit clerk’s office, magistrate court, circuit court, family court, community connections, probation, and drug court. In all, approximately 25 people are effected by the courthouse closing since Thursday morning.

Mace also said the county is working with the City of Kingwood and its water and sewer department, who are handling the sewer line repair effort.

All scheduled hearings and appointments at the courthouse for Friday and Thursday have been cancelled. The courthouse is expected to re-open on Monday, Nov. 2.
